Page 28 25 Finally this type of research could also be used to analyze the role of sympathy and positive group affect in conveying compassion. The findings from the current study demonstrate that positive feelings and sympathy for group members affect policy support independently of group need, political predispositions, or interests. We adopted a narrow definition and very specific measure of compassion to ensure theoretical and empirical clarity in this research. But positive feelings and sympathy for the elderly play an additional role in shaping policy support. An experimental approach would allow us to get at the origins of these positive feelings by manipulating group need in ways that extend beyond economic hardship to include physical helplessness and social isolation.
