Abstract: . . . issues in the psychology of development, including how children form attachments with others, how they come to understand that other people have beliefs and desires, special issues associated with adolescence, and individual differences in development. The other compulsory component is a written dissertation, which should be based on an empirical project in either social or developmental psychology . In addition, students choose from optional papers, which vary from year to year, in order to stay abreast of current faculty interests. At least two papers will be offered each year. At the time of writing the first optional paper is Current Topics in Social Psychology , which reflects on the active research interests of the teaching staff, including social representations, psychoanalysis, siblings and the group, culture and self and social psychology of collective action. The second optional paper is currently Psychology and Social Issues, which explores some of the contributions which psychology has made to society and to the analysis of social problems. It includes the study of cultural psychology and identity, the world of paid work, and recent attempts to promote positive psychology . Students can either take both optional papers or choose one of these papers and another paper from a range of options in sociology, politics or interdisciplinary themes. Except for Inquiry and Analysis I in Part IIA and the dissertation in Part IIB, the assessment for all these courses consists of an unseen three-hour examination taken at the end of the year.
